Full Description
19th century rosewood, MOP & pewter workbox/jewellery box
A good example of a late 19th century lady's workbox/jewellery box
In detail we have the following:
the item is constructed out of rosewood
pewter and mother of pearl inlays - all in excellent condition
a mother of pearl escutcheon in very good condition
no key, but the lock and catch are both present
original hinges and screws
the box is lined with an attractive cream paper with a gold pattern. This may or may not be original to the piece
there is a removable tote tray lined with black felt. This rests on black wood runners. I suspect that the tray and runners are the result of a refurbishment. The tray is removable via two black fabric tabs
the underside of the base is covered in black felt (identical to that lining the tote tray). This is undoubtedly replacement material
please note the veneer repair at the side of the lid (at the back right) as shown in one of the photographs
Summary
With the refurbishment that has been carried out by a previous owner this is now a good example (but not perfect) of a late Victorian lady's workbox/jewellery box. A very solid useable box with an attractive paper lining in keeping with the period during which this item was undoubtedly made (1850 - 1880)
