Full Description
A substantial pitch pine Victorian country kitchen
In detail we have the following:
Made from pitch pine. This is an extremely solid Victorian item which has lasted c.150 years and there is no reason to doubt that it cannot last the same amount of time again
The single door is mounted on two 65mm brass hinges (original) which are very secure
The carcass of the door is made from 30 mm pitch pine which illustrates the over-engineering which went into the production of this piece of furniture
The shape of the escutcheon is typical of Victorian furniture post 1870
The door has its original brass circular handle (I removed this from the cupboard to clean it together with the catch as the latter was a little rusty)
The door opens to reveal a single pine shelf. This is removeable
Pine moulding around the perimeter of the base
Pine backing board
The interior sides and base have been painted matt black
Conditon: very solid. Extremely well made. The handle operates the steel latch shown in the picture, but to my mind the latch should have been made a couple of mm longer as, when closing the door, care has to be taken not to turn the handle too far or it will fail to engage in the metal receiver in the side of the cabinet
Additional storage is also of course provided by the base as this can also act as a shelf
Summary
A typically substantial piece of Victorian furniture in good condition for its age.
