Full Description
A most charming 18th century primitive stick back chair with original paint
This chair is constructed in ash and elm and is believed to have originated in the West Country. It still retains a significant amount of the original green paint.
At some point in the past the chair was painted in white gloss paint. The previous dealer wisely dry scraped the chair to remove the white paint rather than using solvents which would have removed the green paint as well.
The remains of the white gloss can still be seen, but these specks dotted over the chair do not detract from the dominant green colour
Underneath, a considerable amount of white paint remains. I did consider removing this, but it overlays black paint like putty and what appears to be the fingerprints from a small hand.
The seat stands on three ash, staved legs with a bow-shaped arm rail. One of the legs has suffered some deterioration as shown in one of the photographs but is still sturdy (please see photograph).
This is a most charming decorative chair, occupying little space, but a chair that will attract a great deal of attention
This item is for collection only (from Buntingford, East Herts. SG9)
