Antique, Regency, c. 1820 trinket/workbox - parquetry

Full Description
An extremely well patinated pine trinket or workbox dating to c. 1820
In detail we have the following:
- a well patinated top with central parquetry emblem consisting of pine coloured triangles and ebonised diamond shapes. There is a possibility that the inlay is boxwood and ebony but I have erred on the side of caution by stating it is pine with pine ebonisation
- the lid opens to reveal brass hinges secured by slot headed screws, some of which are replacements but which clearly have some age
- the base of the top tray is covered in green baize
- brass lock (which appears to be original). The key is typically Georgian in design and does operate the lock but the keep is broken so this item is no longer lockable. The key gives a pleasant solid sounding noise when turned
- to the right of the lock is a small hole which holds a retaining pin which would have kept the drawer securely fastened once the box was locked
- ebonised kite shaped escutcheon
- the top tray holds an original copy of 'The Courier' dated October 16th. 1813
- the drawer is lined in green baize
- hand cut dovetails to the drawer
- small turned drawer knob
- the underside of the base contains 4 green baize squares used to prevent this item marking any top on which it was placed
- some minor warping of the wood (as seen in the photographs)
Summary:
A delightful item dating to the first quarter of the 19th century. A very solid work or trinket box. The nature of both the parquetry and the dovetails indicates that this is a provincial item. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of this box is the patination where the colour represents the copious amounts of wax applied over the years plus handling - this item has clearly been treasured and used and rightly so
