Antique, stunning, burr walnut miniature cabinet
This is an antique, probably Victorian, burr walnut cabinet consisting of three drawers residing behind a lockable set of two doors.
This item oozes quality:
1. All faces of this cabinet are veneered in burr walnut (including the back). Often the backs of miniature cabinets were not veneered as the backs would be on a table against a wall and thus not visible. I suspect that the cabinet maker responsible for this item fully intended it to be on show and thus veneered all the faces.
2. The cabinet has brass campaign style handles. These are somewhat small (but in perfect proportion to the cabinet) suggesting that this cabinet may have been made to house a lady's jewellery etc. A sign of quality is that the cabinet maker even went to the trouble of trying to line up vertically the slots of the screws
3. The full length hinges of this cabinet fold back 180 degrees thus showing off fully the quality of the burr walnut drawers. This is also why the cabinet maker veneered the inner faces of both doors
The original working lock and key are in place. I have added the tassle. The lock has a nice tight spring - there was no intention that the doors of this cabinet would become loose
The opened doors reveals three equally sized mahogany lined drawers. Indeed, the carcass of this cabinet is in mahogany. The interior of each of the drawers is different:
Top drawer: unlined, but partitioned into two
Middle drawer: lined in pink/red velvet with recesses for implements - probably scissors etc. The lining could be removed, but I suspect that the new owner of this item will keep it in place and use the recesses to house rings, earrings etc
Bottom drawer: lined in pink/red velvet
Condition: There are a few minor losses to the veneer of the plinth but nothing that needs addressing even for a pernickety person like myself. There is a slightly faded area of veneer just below the handle of the top drawer, but this is only visible under certain lighting conditions. All other dis-colourations of the veneer shown in the photographs are due to the flash of the camera
This cabinet in reality speaks for itself. It will be well packed and will be sent via UPS whose racked out vans will ensure its safe collection and delivery
