Antique (post 1885) naive, provincial stool with useful drawer and faceted legs
A delightful, naive, provincial stool with drawer - a unique item
This stool has a rustic, naive charm about it. It was cobbled together using various woods in the late 19th century.
It is likely that the top is sycamore, and that the legs are in ash. The base of the drawer has a tongue and groove joint indicating that this stool was fashioned after 1885 when the 'side-matching tool' was invented.
The legs are tapered and faceted, which required some skill in their manufacture. One has a small amount of movement but is still very secure.
The top of the stool has a few minor, but attractive cracks. There are a few scattered woodworm holes throughout this piece, but as is standard practice, this item has been sprayed with woodworm killer, though any woodworm damage is historic.
This stool is crudely constructed but has lasted well and carries its age admirably.
The drawer has been over-engineered and is far more substantial than was required given its size. This makes one wonder whether this stool was used by a workman who housed his tools in the drawer.
The top bears the remains of some historic varnish. This item has been recently cleaned and waxed. It has an attractive patina and is both decorative and useful.
A charming little addition to any home
