Antique 17th/18th century 5 plank oak boarded chest of small proportions

£850

17th century

Dated

Full Description

An exemplary example of an oak 5 plank boarded chest of small proportions. This was probably made for a fine country house in the 17th or 18th century to stand in the nursery. This would sometimes be termed a 6 plank boarded chest but in reality the 5th plank would have been cleft in two so as to create the two smaller end boards, so strictly speaking this is a 5 plank (6 board) chest. This is one of the best examples I have seen.

The chest that is for sale is clear of woodworm. The original wire/split pin hinges are present, as is the original lock and lock plate. The lock plate has been securely fastened using long hand wrought nails which pass through the depth of the front board and then bent over (as shown in one of the photographs). Every precaution was taken to reduce the chances of this chest being broken into !

This charming chest boasts thumbnail borders and 'V' shaped feet. The top has a moulded edge on three sides. There is no key, but the lock is in the unlocked position so the hasp (original to the piece) fits into the lock plate. All the timbers are original and hand forged nail fixings are present throughout - no later nails have been added. There are no repairs or replacement pieces of wood. This diminutive chest has had a very sheltered existence with none of the bruising or splits you normally find on this type of item

Boarded chests of this size are extremely rare. This item was made as a purely functional piece of furniture for the storage of precious items. The interior is void - there is no 'candle' box or cut outs in the wood suggesting that one was ever fitted. The front board exhibits  scratch / scribed geometric shallow carvings consisting of triangles, zig-zags and diamond shapes (best seen in the close up photograph of the lock plate)

The rear of the chest (in addition to the interior and the underside of the base) is unwaxed as is correct for an item of this period

This is a small but substantial boarded chest and a lovely example possessing great charm as well as rarity. A truly exemplary item with good color and patination
