Antique 17th/18th century oak storage box

£270

17th/18th century

Dated

Full Description

An antique oak storage box dating to the 17th or 18th century

This is of nailed and boarded construction and is very solid. In detail we have the following:

a single board top with two minor expansion cracks

the hinges are probably not original - the cut-outs for them seem too wide. Having said that, the hinges have considerable age and are attached via hand wrought nails as one would expect. One of the hinges has not been fitted in quite the right place which means that the lid is slightly twisted. The hasp does fit into the lock plate but the lid has to be twisted slightly for this to occur

two deep incised lozenges decorate the lid

stepped square corners also decorate the lid. These corners are united by reeded decoration. The front left corner is slightly damaged

chip-carved edges to the lid

void interior

the Georgian key is appropriate to the age of this item, but is not original to the box, and does not operate the lock - it is purely decorative in nature. The tassel is a modern decorative addition
