Antique 18th century (1785) sampler, Lewana Gibbens, glazed and framed
When I acquired this sampler I thought that it would be a relatively straightforward task to trace this person whose work this was (given the unusual names) but I have been unable to trace this young lady despite trawling the geneology records
There are no holes in this sampler, but at the top right hand corner there is some historic repair to the stitching
There are a few anomalies in the stitching indicating that this was the work of a young girl:
- there is no 'U' within the alphabet, and the sampler is too narrow to contain all the letters of the alphabet (the letters X, Y and Z are missing)
- full stops have been added to numbers 10, 11, 12 and 13, but not to any other numbers
- the word 'remembrance;' is missing the letter 'e' at the end of the word
The frame is new, as is the glazing, mount, backing board and hanging cord
The frame and mount are in a delicate pale lemon colour. This colour complements the sampler very well
This sampler is ready to hang
Postage is just to within the UK mainland, with delivery being via UPS, but collection is also welcome
