Antique brass cage light (lantern/porch light) or table light

£80

c.1880

Dated

Full Description

A stylish antique cage brass lantern/porch light or table light, probably dating to to the end of the 19th century

This item had been converted to run off electricity when I acquired it but in September 2024 had the following new parts fitted: new lamp holder, new wiring, new bronzed hanging chain (should this item be wanted as a hanging lantern) new bulb and a new plug. This item has been earthed and is working but has not been PAT tested

The hinged door gives access to the bulb should this need to be changed at some point in the future

The door hinge is in good order

This item is currently operational as a table top light. If it was to be used as a hanging lantern or porch light a ceiling rose hook plate (readily available) would be needed so that the hanging chain or fitted brass hoop could be employed

This item is not glazed. I have only ever seen two of these lights before neither of which were glazed. The original 'glazing' no doubt consisted of a number of horn sheets

This item could also be used with a battery operated candle light (as shown, but not included in this sale).

Such candle lights are readily available with timers

This is a very unusual light and is a very decorative item. The base sits squarely on a table but the superstructure is a little warped indicative of the age of this item - hopefully, the photographs convey the quirky lean
