Full Description
An antique stylish tub-style/barrel back chair with spindle back and serpentine seat rail
The seat is supported by turned front and plain rear legs all united by four sets of double cross stretchers
This type of seat has gone by many names since it was first brought to the market in 1885 when it was known as a caboose chair. This was because there would be at least one of these chairs in the last wagon (a caboose) on an American railroad train. This wagon would be occupied by the train crew. This type of chair was specifically made to withstand abuse and is one of the strongest types of chairs made. This particular item is indeed very sturdy
This chair dates to c.1910 - it has an elm seat, ash legs and plain beech spindles to the sides and rear
This chair may originally have had an upholstered seat, but the existing elm seat complements very well the other woods from which this chair is constructed. No doubt elm was chosen for the seat because of its figuring - there is a clearly visible knot in the seat which does not affect the comfort of this chair. The brass studwork clearly has some age since the front studs have been worn down by the chair's occupants sliding in and out of this chair over the decades
One of the spindles is new as one was missing when I acquired the chair. The top of the back rail shows some damage, but there are no sharp edges - no doubt because the constant handling of this chair has produced a smooth finish
The chair has a lovely waxed patina
This chair is for either personal (or courier) collection from Buntingford (East Herts. SG9). Collection can be on any day (including weekends) by prior arrangement
