Antique Coalport bowl with staples
A charming small antique ceramic bowl from the Coalport pottery. I tend to specialise in furniture items and stay away from ceramics owing to a lack of detailed knowledge. That said, I have always been drawn to any ceramic with staples as they represent cherished items that have been repaired with considerable skill. This was the main reason for purchasing this particular item but this bowl is particularly interesting as it demonstrates how pottery back stamps can be misleading, particularly when they are associated with staples which are always considered to be of some age.......................
The back stamp clearly states Coalport 1750. There are two possible interpretations of this date:
1. The piece was produced in 1750 or
2. The Coalport pottery began production in 1750
In reality, neither of these assumptions are correct, as the pottery did not begin production until 1795
The words 'Coalport AD 1750' relates to pottery produced between 1875 and 1881, so at the very least this bowl dates to 1875; however, the back stamp also includes a crown mark and the word 'England'. The crown mark was introduced by Coalport in 1881 and the word 'England' was introduced in 1891. This means that this charming bowl may have been produced as late as 1900 or even beyond - a far cry from 1750!
This date of production also means that the staples (though antique) may have been added in the first half the 20th century. There are 5 staples in total - 1 on the base and 4 around the sides
An interesting piece, and a reminder that not everything is what it appears to be !!
