Full Description
Antique French c.1700 French leather casket – Tobias Jellinek interest
This item was in the personal collection of Tobias Jellinek, the author of ‘Early British Chairs and Seats’ 1500 – 1700’ an outstanding piece of work and one considered the Bible for those with an interest in early English seating. Tobias Jellinek died in 2023 and this casket was in an auction of his personal possessions
According to the ‘Antiques Trade Gazette' Tobias Jellinek “was part of a generation of British vernacular furniture scholars that sought to unpick the work of fakers, fantasists and embellishers in the less scrupulous days of antique dealing”
This leather casket has a domed lid with an iron bale handle and is decorated on all sides with metal thread ‘filigree‘ floral designs
The lid rises to reveal a small quantity of 18th century and later passementerie (elaborate braids and trimmings)
The lock is present but there is no key
There are two ‘L’ shaped iron catches either side of the lock – these appear to be original to the piece
I have included the auction label indicating that the Auction House dated this item to c.1700. The book by Tobias Jellinek shown in some of the photographs is not included in the sale
