Full Description
Antique George 111 (c. 1780) Royal Hospital pewter bowl
This is an unusual and rare 18th century item being a substantial pewter hospital bowl dating to c.1780.
There is an interesting acquisition note on the underside suggesting that at one time this item resided in the Royal Chelsea Hospital. This hospital was founded by Nell Gwynne during the reign of Charles 11 around 100 years earlier. The hospital was commissioned in 1681 and building work commenced in 1686. The Hospital was completed in 1692 i.e. during the reign of William and Mary. I guess the acquisition note is from a museum. The curator has dated this item to 1780 and the Auction House from which I obtained it did not challenge this date
- two carrying handles
- of plain circular form. The form is similar to 17th century wine tasters
- engraved 'ROYAL HOSPITAL'
- scratched beneath one of the handles are the numbers 2602
- 22.5cms diameter, (30.5cms with handles), 11.5cm high; Base: 14cms diameter
A heavy object weighing 1.48 Kgs
- there are some marks underneath one of the handles which I have photographed. These marks may be incomplete and I have unfortunately been unable to identify them. The marks appear to form the letter K with both legs terminating in toes/claws
