Antique rare tinted copy of 1787 engraving of a picture, 'The Mill at Baldock'
In 1787 a 'Master Chapman' drew a picture entitled, 'The Mill at Baldock'.
An engraving by R. Pollard then followed.
This is is a tinted copy of that engraving and is in good condition. It is a rare item.
Among the millers who tenanted the mill was James Cornwell whose daughter, Mary, was to become famous as the 'Lass of the Mill'. Mary was born in 1722. James Cornwell kept an alehouse at the mill entitled the 'Black Horse'. The 'Black Horse' can be seen in the engraving.
Mary became noted for her great beauty. Among her admirers was the curate of St. Mary's who was so taken with her that he penned a poem in praise of her. This poem was published in 1753 entitled, 'The Lass of the Mill'.
Mary died in 1769 aged 43 and was buried in Baldock churchyard
