Antique boarded oak chest dated 1646 (reign of Charles 1st).
A practical, diminutive size. This is a very attractive 17th century oak boarded chest with a stunning colour and patination.
the top board exhibits the following: impressive wide and deep chip carving around the perimeter together with parallel incised lines forming a cross design with the perimeter of the top also decorated at intervals with incised semi-circles
the front board is decorated with two half-lunettes
original lock plate
no lock was ever fitted to this chest – it was locked simply via a hasp attached to the underside of the top board (only part of this hasp still remains)
void interior
the strap hinges are not original to the piece but clearly have considerable age
two battens are historic additions and were used to strengthen the top
the top has a number of attractive cracks which were the cause of the later battens being added
the back board contains a carving with the date 1646. This is original to the piece
original hand wrought nails throughout
