Antique Georgian large elm storage box
Unusually, the ‘candle box’ associated with this item is attached to the base rather than being at the top. It used to be thought that these boxes were for candles as the tallow would help to prevent a moth infestation, but some scholars are now of the belief that sweet smelling flowers and herbs were also placed in such ‘candle boxes’
This is a large box with its original lock plate and lock. There is no key
Strap hinges support the lid and are very secure. They are not the original hinges
It is quite possible that the bracket feet are original with this item deliberately created as a storage box. The bracket feet are of the style we associate with the Sheraton period (1790 – 1805)
Condition:
Every panel has evidence of historic woodworm, but the entire item has been liberally sprayed with woodworm killer as a precaution
The front corners of the lid show the most woodworm damage
The hinges are secure
Summary:
The size of this box makes it ideal as a coffee table or as a storage box
Good colour and patination
