Vintage 1930's/40's early Herbert Terry Anglepoise – model 1208

Full Description

The Herbert Terry Anglepoise model 1208 is often confused as being the slightly earlier Equipoise model produced by George Carwardine in the 1930’s. There are some subtle differences between the Carwardine model and Herbert Terry’s 1208 and 1209 lamps: the Carwardine shade (whilst of similar size) has a slightly different profile, being thinner and less rounded than the Terry models and the base of a Carawardine lamp is completely square whilst Terry models have a bowed edge

On the basis of the above (and other construction details not mentioned here) this lamp is an early Terry model 1208. This item was probably fully painted when new and the remains of the original black paint is in evidence

In the 1950’s the length of the arm of a 1208 was reduced to 12 inches as opposed to the original 18 inch arm but we cannot unfortunately use this information to date this particular item because the reputation within industrial settings of the 1208 and 1209 models meant that production continued for many years after the shorter arm version was introduced. The lower and upper arms of the item for sale here are both 18 inches in length

The 1208 and 1209 models proved very popular but were designed for industrial use. It was soon felt that the 4 spring designs (in evidence with this model) was too industrial looking for a domestic context – this led to the 3 spring Anglepoise termed the 1227 being created. Manufacture of this model began in 1935

For ease of use this lamp has been fitted with an in-line on/off switch

Though re-wired and working this lamp has not been PAT tested

Provenance:

I found this item languishing in a carrier bag in an antiques shop where it had just arrived after a recent house clearance – it was somewhat worse for wear to say the least. It had been liberally coated with lashings of cream paint over all visible parts including every nut, the springs, the tensioning holes and even the exposed cabling. This item has been painstakingly stripped to reveal the original steel and black paint - both left in homage to its industrial origin

It has been re-wired using cable obtained directly from the Anglepoise company, together with a black plug and bulb holder sourced from the same company. It has not been PAT tested since I am unable to find a local electrician who has the certificate to complete such a task. The original ‘CRABTREE’ stamped bulb holder is included in the sale. Part of this original bulb holder shroud is missing (as seen in one of the photographs) which is the reason it has not been used when the re-wiring was carried out.

This is a striking lamp which, though designed for industrial use, displays well in a domestic context
